Finnish Flavors: A Culinary Adventure

Hello everyone!

A new week is starting, and what better way to begin than by thinking back to our last holiday?

We spent a week in Finland in March this year — about six days in Rovaniemi, in the heart of Lapland, and ended with two days in the capital, Helsinki.

Whenever we travel, we always try to taste the local food, and we were really pleased with our culinary experiences in Finland!

Next, I’ll show you two of our favourite dishes from that week, both from a restaurant we loved so much that we went there twice — something we almost never do!

The restaurant is called Nili Restaurant, located in Rovaniemi. (Tip: make a reservation in advance — it’s always packed!)

Finnish Salmon Soup (in Finnish: Lohikeitto)

Lohikeitto is a creamy and smooth soup made with pieces of fresh salmon, potatoes, carrots, and leeks, all cooked in a light broth with cream (or milk) and seasoned with fresh dill. This final touch of fresh dill gives it a delicate and characteristic aroma. It’s a simple yet flavorful soup — perfect as a starter or a light meal, especially during the colder months.

Sautéed Reindeer (in Finnish: Perinteistä poron paistikäristystä)

This traditional Lapland dish is made with finely sliced reindeer meat, sautéed slowly in butter or fat, often with onions. The meat is cooked until tender and is typically served with mashed potatoes and wild berry jam (usually lingonberry). It’s a comforting meal, typical of northern Finland, and especially popular during the colder months.

Just looking at the photos makes us want to go back!

One of these days we have to try cooking these recipes at home! At least the salmon soup, as it’s difficult to find reindeer in Frankfurt.

Until next time!

Each spoonful brought back memories of the traditional salmon soup we tasted in Finland, with its delicate balance of creaminess and fresh fish. It’s amazing how food can instantly transport us across borders. If you’re curious about the Finnish version, check out our post here: Finnish Flavors: A Culinary Adventure. […]

  2. […] wasn’t our first time with GuruWalk — we’ve also joined their tours in Finland (click here to read about that trip), in Cusco, Peru, during our culinary journey through the Andes, and in Lyon, France, and […]
